Andy Sheppard is one of Britain’s foremost tenor and soprano saxophonists, a successful recording artist, bandleader and composer (for film, TV and theatre), is one of a very few British jazz artists to have made a significant international impact. He's worked with an astonishing range of musical partners, and has played in the big bands of all three of the greatest post-war jazz composers: Carla Bley, George Russell and Gil Evans. In a career spanning over four decades he’s become a truly accomplished World Class Saxophonist.
Originally from Salisbury, Andy made his home in Bristol in the early 80s following a stint living and working in Paris. His rise to become an Internationally renowned artist came through hard work, intelligently composed music that developed themes around groove based material, and a self-taught saxophone style (Coltrane influenced) that is unique and recognisable the world over.
Collaborative work with some of the world’s finest performers only enhanced his growing reputation for imaginative improvisation and a rare beauty in delivery. A diverse bunch, all adding a new experience for both parties include classical musicians John Harle, Nigel Kennedy and most recently pianist Joanna McGregor. world musicians Brazilian Nana Vasconcelos, Africans Baaba Maal, Fela Kuti, Indian violinist Ravi Shankar and folk and rock musicians Elvis Costello, John Martyn and Kathryn Tickell.
…it’s a dazzling genre busting swerve through surging post-bop jazz, loving but radical surgery on rock and pop classics and angular, wryly humorous programming that never fails to have an audience begging for more.Mike Collins ~ Mike Collins
Andy has also developed the Saxophone Massive project that aims to integrate saxophonists of all ages and abilities into a collective sax-choir to create work for special celebrations and festivals around the world, many times involving over 50+ musicians at a time. His longer term jazz work includes US stars Carla Bley and Steve Swallow, and Europeans Rita Marcotulli, Maj-Britt Kramer and Jean-Marie Marchado plus UK guitarist John Parricelli.
Andy recorded his third offering for ECM Records last year ‘Surrounded By Sea’ with Eivind Aarset (guitar) and long term associates Michel Benita (double bass) and Sebastian Rochford (drums); and his contribution on Carla Bley's trio album Andando el Tiempo gained a 5***** 'Masterpiece’ selection (1 of only 15) in the Downbeat Magazine top albums of 2016
Tony Orrell first played with Andy back in the early ‘80s in Sphere recording the album Present Tense. During the same period he played with Spirit Level which culminated in the album Killer Bunnies featuring ex-Mingus trumpeter, Jack Walrath, and Paul Dunmall.
Tony has also backed many US jazz musicians including Tal Farlow, Slim Gaillard, Spike Robinson, Harry Allen and Gene the Mighty Flea Connors, as well as the cream of UK soloists - Harry Beckett, Elton Dean, Keith Tippett, Larry Stabbins, Alan Skidmore, Evan Parker, etc.
During the ‘90s he formed the Gas Giants with Will Gregory (Goldfrapp) and the Adrian Utley Quartet. These musical relationships have continued to the present day
Dan Moore is a pianist who thrives on diversity. A composer, arranger and producer, Dan has worked with Pee Wee Ellis, Fred Wesley, Will Young, Lillian Boutte, Roni Size, Don Weller, The Mahotella Queens, Cheikh Lo, Dave O'Higgins and Tony Remy as well as touring and recording throughout Europe and the USA with James Morton’s ‘Porkchop’ and Phantom Limb.
More recently he’s been seen playing for Rodriguez (Searching for Sugarman), Tom Jones, Joss Stone, Beth Orton and Will Gregory's Moog Ensemble featuring Adrian Utley (Portishead), British composer Graham Fitkin and classical conductor Charles Hazelwood
