Juan Galiardo was born in Seville, Spain and lives in San Roque, Andalucía. He graduated from Cadiz University in 1998 and from Berklee College of Music in 2004 where he was mentored by US jazz stars Barry Harris, Danilo Pérez, Joe Lovano, Joanne Brackeen and Edward Tomassi. He also got to perform with a number of top American names during this period including saxophonists Jerry Bergonzi and Donny McCaslin. He later went on to tour and record with these guys.
After moving back to Spain he has played with pretty much all of the main jazz stars there and those touring Spain including Arturo Serra, Perico Sambeat, Marc Miralta, Ignasi Gonzalez, Celia Mur, David León, Miguel Benito and Alvaro Pérez..
Juan is a really superb jazz musician in the mainstream jazz genre, and this will be his third UK visit. His first was in 2014 as part of the Arturo Serra Quartet who toured throughout Europe, and included touring Wales in 2013, as part of an Arts Council Wales project España Cymru, organised by Brecon Jazz Club and Jazz Live Cymru. It is a continuation of that scheme in conjunction with Brecon Jazz Club (BJC) that brings Juan back this time. I encountered the folks from BJC at a recent Jazz Promotion Network meeting in Bristol and managed to hook up a gig for Juan to come to Bristol.
An inventive and often dazzling pianist ~ Ian Mann (The Jazzman.com)
Tonight he is supported by two young jazz musicians; leading graduates of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama specialist Jazz Performance degree programme.
Pete Komor is based in South Wales and leads his own Septet, also playing regularly with the Teddy Smith Big Band and the Tripp Ensemble. Recently, he toured with the Mañana Collective featuring visiting Cuban flautist Javier Zalba (Buena Vista Social Club, Irakere). Pete played a series of jazz gigs in Switzerland last year and is also part of the latest recording by trumpeter Tom Syson.
Rod Oughton has performed alongside many jazz greats including Norma Winstone, Soweto Kinch, Kenny Wheeler, Iain Bellamy, Huw Warren and others, and has also appeared at leading UK venues such as Ronnie Scott's and Vortex. He has studied with Martin France, James Maddren (Kit Downs Trio) and Jeff Williams. As a member of the National Youth Jazz Collective, he worked with Issie Barratt, Mike Walker and Steve Waterman amongst others.
Rod has a natural gift that is somewhat rare in my experience. He shows remarkable talent and ability. ~ Jeff Williams, US Jazz drummer (Stan Getz, Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman)
Juan has also organised the Cadiz International Jazz Workshop for four years as part of the Cadiz University music programme, and at home in Andalucía, Juan teaches jazz piano, plays regular concerts, festivals and clubs, with regular appearances at Gibraltar jazz club
Galiardo coaxed consistently inventive, adventurous and frequently feverish solos… I was highly impressed with his playing… ~ Ian Mann live and CD review
It will be mainstream lyrical jazz that really swings; a classic jazz trio, piano-led, by a talented artist with a subtle touch.
