John Parricelli (Guitars & effects)

Described as a fascinating collaboration between two of the most creative musicians in UK jazz, this contemplative duo and their album P.S. is a clearly articulated, lyrical, atmospheric and absorbing exploration of a wide range of influences, including jazz, Latin and ambient music.

John Parricelli

Parricelli plays acoustic nylon string and steel string guitars, as well as his more usual electric. He is perhaps the UK’s most in-demand guitarist and it’s easy to see why: he is an absolute master at creating delicate and deep environments from a vast range of sounds, always with loving care. John began playing guitar professionally in 1982, thereafter working in many genres within the UK music business. In the mid-80s, he was a founder member of Loose Tubes, appearing on Loose Tubes' Delightful Precipice and Open Letter. Through the 80s, 90s and on into the 00s, he has worked and often recorded with numerous artists in contemporary jazz, among them Julian Argüelles, Iain Ballamy (Acme), Lee Konitz, Mark Lockheart, Paul Motian, Gerard Presencer, Andy Sheppard, Martin Speake, Stan Sulzmann, Kenny Wheeler, Annie Whitehead, and Tim Whitehead.

He is also is in demand for work outside jazz, including appearing with Judy Tzuke, Shara Nelson and Mike Oldfield. He is also very active as a studio musician, appearing on soundtracks to many television programmes and numerous films. His work on films and TV since 1999 has clocked up over 80 credits to date and climbing, including Skyfall, Fast & Furious, The Hunger Games, Elizabeth “The Golden Age”, Kinky Boots, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, The Constant Gardner, Gosford Park, Billy Elliot and most recently Legend the biopic about the Kray twins, w/Tom Hardy. His TV work has included many series including the BBC’s Nature and The Natural World. In 2011 he appeared on stage with Peter Erskine and John Paul Jones at the Royal Opera House, London in the new opera Anna Nicole.

Parricelli seems capable of endless feats of subtlety and control. Having Parricelli in the band is like having several world musicians, all in the one chair... ~ London Jazz

Andy Sheppard

Andy Sheppard is a curiously wonderful voice in the British jazz world. From the late eighties until fairly recently, he's barely been out of the spotlight with high profile tours and record releases. The air currents in Andy Sheppard's saxophone sound so close to your ear that if you put the speakers close to your curtains you would half-expect them to flutter. Andy is one of Britain’s foremost tenor and soprano saxophonists, a successful recording artist, bandleader and composer (for film, TV and theatre), is one of a very few British jazz artists to have made a significant international impact, he’s become a truly accomplished World Class Saxophonist.

He's worked with an astonishing range of musical partners, and has played in the big bands of all three of the greatest post-war jazz composers: Carla Bley, George Russell and Gil Evans, classical musicians John Harle, Nigel Kennedy and most recently pianist Joanna McGregor, and world musicians, Brazilian Nana Vasconcelos, Baaba Maal, Fela Kuti, Indian violinist Shankar and folk and rock musicians Elvis Costello, John Martyn & Kathryn Tickell.

Andy Sheppard…is more expressive now than at any time in his career. ~ The Guardian

Andy Sheppard

Andy has also developed the Saxophone Massive project that aims to integrate saxophonists of all ages and abilities into a collective sax-choir to create work for special celebrations and festivals around the world, many times involving over 50 musicians at a time. His longer term jazz work includes US stars Carla Bley and Steve Swallow, and Europeans Rita Marcotulli, Maj-Britt Kramer and Jean-Marie Marchado. His group Trio Libero with young drum star Seb Rochford and French bassist Michel Benita, recorded two offerings for ECM Records, and with the inclusion of guitarist Eivind Aarset a third ECM outing with the current Surrounded By Sea.

Andy has been on a remarkable roll in terms of his continuing development and individuality as a composer and an improviser and since there's nowhere to hide in such an exposed setting like a duo, these strengths are tested all the way.
